It’s a pleasure to present the Self-recovery from disasters: an interdisciplinary perspective working paper. This paper is published by ODI (in collaboration with CARE UK, BGS and UCL) and presents the findings from the Promoting Safer Building pilot research project in the Philippines and Nepal that investigated how disaster-affected households in low- and middle-income countries rebuild their homes in situations where little or no support is available from humanitarian agencies.
The project was an interdisciplinary collaboration involving social scientists, geoscientists, structural engineers and humanitarian practitioners. It investigated households’ self-recovery trajectories and the wide range of technical, environmental, institutional and socioeconomic factors influencing them over time. It also considered how safer construction practices can be more effectively integrated into humanitarian shelter responses.

A second phase of the project, studying self-recovery in urban settings in the Philippines and Nepal, has recently begun.
We would also like to say a big thank you to all of you who have been part of this project in one way or another through discussions, workshops, roundtables and sometimes even directly in the research activities. We hope that you will enjoy reading through this and look forward to future discussions and collaboration.
